Characteristic Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians
Mammals
There occur at least 15 mammals species. It is almost certain that further research will show the occurrence of even more species especially of the families of bats and small rodents. Some of the most interesting species include:
- the otter (Lutra lutra) which is abundant in the rivers, streams and drainage canals
- the wild boar (Sus scrofa), the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), the wolf (Canis lupus) which occur in the surrounding mountains
Reptiles
In the region have been recorded at least 28 species of reptiles that includes all types of turtles (the three types of land turtles: Testulo marginata, Testudo hermanni, Testudo graeca, the two kinds of freshwater turtles: Mauremys caspica and Emys orbicularis and loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta ), 11 species of lizards and 9 species of snakes .
Amphibians
The amphibians of the region include the Epirus Frog (Rana epirotica) the Greek Stream Frog (Rana graeca) at Evinos River, the Agile Frog (Rana dalmatina), the European Green Toad (Bufo viridis), the European Tree Frog (Iyla arborea ) and the Common Toad (Bufo bufo).
