Characteristic Fish
Great scientific and ecological interest show the different species of fishes of freshwaters that exists in river, streams, irrigation and drainage channels in the area. Some of these species are endemic to this geographic area, such as the Aristotle's Catfish (Silurus aristotelis), the Tseroukla (Scardinius acarnanicus), the Drosinis (Leuciscus svallize), the Trichonovelonitsa (Gobitis trichonica) and the Nanogovios or Trichonis dwarf Goby (Economidichthys trichonis). The most characteristic fish species of the lagoon is the Goby (Gobius gobius) whose distribution coincides with that of the lagoon and generally brackish waters of the area. They found 5 types of Mullets: the Flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), the Golden grey mullet (Liza aurata), the Leaping mullet (Liza saliens), the Thicklip grey mullet (Chelo labrosus) and the Thinlip mullet (Liza ramada) on which relies most of the fishery production of the lagoon. The European Seabass (Dicentrarhus labrax) and the Gilt-head Bream (Sparus aurata) are also fishery products of the lagoon. Some of the sea fish species such as the Diplodus annularis, the Sand Steenbras or striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus), the Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus) etc. are also found at lagoon but they are being located mostly in the transition zone between the lagoon and the sea. Other species are:
Platichthys flesus luscus European flounder
Diplodus sargus Sargo
Puntazzo puntazzo Sheephead bream
There where exist or are flowing sweet waters (creeks, streams , drainage ditches ), there are characteristic freshwater fishes:
Gyprinus carpio Common carp
Carassius auratus Goldfish
Tinca tinca Tench
Leuciscus cephalus European chub
Rutilus rutilus Common roach
Scandinius erythrophthlmus Common rudd
